A trip down memory lane
Before Good Hearted Studio, I entered the world of marketing 7 years ago, back in 2017. I have been lucky to have had so many opportunities to work with amazing mentors, wonderful brands and gain hands-on experience in so many areas of content and digital marketing.
I’m so happy to have found my footing now with copywriting in Good Hearted Studio, but I had a few different chapters in my marketing career before I landed here. Let’s take a trip down memory lane...
2017-2019
Fresh out of high school, I was studying a Bachelor of Communication at the University of the Sunshine Coast, majoring in Social Media and Creative Advertising. My foot-in-the-door to marketing was a part-time admin-turned-marketing job at a local mobility scooter retailer.
At only 18, I somehow fell into a role designing and managing our print advertising portfolio in publications like New Idea, Courier Mail, That’s Life, and countless others. This was an odd but fun chapter, I learnt so much. I wonder if the reps at those magazines ever knew it was a literal *child* they were liaising with lol.
early 2019
My final year of university was a busy one! I was studying full-time and working part-time, on top of starting an internship as part of my Uni course. I snagged an internship at Dash of Milk Agency, a boutique social media agency and was lucky enough to be mentored by a fellow USC grad a few years ahead of me.
Some days we were shooting content or developing social media strategies, other days I was lugging around bags of ice for the agency launch party. I actually loved every minute, this chapter of my life made me feel like I was in a movie, tbh. As busy as this time was, I soaked up everything like a sponge and built a portfolio from all the hands-on agency work I had a chance to be a part of.
late 2019
Off the back of my internship, while finishing my last semester of uni, I applied for a Digital Marketing Specialist role in a Brisbane agency with a small team. Did I mention I was incredibly unqualified for this role? It was all paid ads and I was mostly versed in organic content. But, I had a phone interview with the founder and she was impressed enough with me that she ended up creating an alternate role for me as Social Media Coordinator. It felt like a dream!
The next 6 months I was balancing my new role managing a portfolio of social media clients and my studies. Some days I would drive 2 hours up to Noosa to shoot content for my Uni client then drive 2 hours back into Brisbane to work. You wouldn’t catch me being that crazy now, lol.
2020-2021
I jetted off to Europe in late 2019 to celebrate finishing uni with a white Christmas. Came back in the new year, and BOOM— COVID era was upon us.
Obviously, for everyone, this was a whirlwind time of uncertainty. I was lucky enough to work from home, but unlucky for me I wasn’t great at prioritising my self-care.
In an industry where falling into “hustle culture” is so easy, after 2 years advancing in my role, getting killer results for my clients and wonderful feedback I was also spending too many nights crying and tired. I was BURNT OUT.
2021-2022
Boo, for being burnt out. But yay, for a burn-out-induced-passion-project.
I ended up quitting my full-time agency job and in complete delusion started a vegan grazing/brunch box business. Totally random, I know. But there was a gap in the market, and it actually went off. So, slay?
I had so much support from the vegan community [and a knack for knowing how to connect with my audience] that Happy Waffle Co was booked and busy. It grew from nothing to 900+ followers in 3 months. I loved running my business, bringing my ideas to life from scratch and seeing my community grow.
This time of my life helped me fall in love with what I loved most about marketing again, plus gave me an appreciation and understanding for the ins and outs of the business owner/start-up mindset.
As much as I loved my “waffle-girl” era, eventually I missed creating content for brands and helping change-makers bring their dreams to life.
I realised unlike in someone else’s agency, in my own business I could play by my own rules. If I only wanted to help raise the voices of good humans who shared the same values as me to make the world a better place, so be it.
Since starting in 2022, I’ve spent 2 years finding my footing with where I want Good Hearted to go. I’ve worked with some really amazing social purpose-led start-ups on all areas of their digital marketing needs but I’ve realised my superpower [and what I enjoy most!] is writing copy and helping go-getter brands find their voice.
Years of feedback on how well I can easily slip into a client’s shoes to create their brand voice like a chameleon and I have finally opened my ears that Good Hearted Studio was in-fact destined to be a copywriting studio for good-hearted brands. The rest is history.
